Woman honored for fighting those who spread domestic violence to pets

COVINGTON (FOX19) - Northern Kentucky kicks off October as National Domestic Violence Awareness month with its 17th annual Day of Peace, held Friday, September 30th, from 11AM-1PM at the Carnegie Visual and Performing Arts Center located at 1028 Scott Blvd., Covington. The event is free to the public. Lunch is provided through generous contributions made by: LaRosa’s, Heavenly Frosted Cupcakes, Colonial Cottage, and TGIFriday’s. Local group, Ellery, will provide music.

The event theme this year is: “Be a Courageous Voice for Peace!” and focuses on generating awareness to the realities of both stalking and pet abuse—often hidden forms of dating/domestic violence. Keynote Speaker is Bridgett Wright, survivor and advocate in the 2009 conviction of Russell Swigart, whom broke into Ms. Wright’s residence and stabbed to death two of her cats.  Ms.

It will be open every weekend during the month of October from 10 a.m.

TV survival shows are one thing; now try a little of the real thing

UNION, KY (FOX19) - Big Bone Lick State Park is hosting its “Lick the Wild: Survival Skills Weekend” Sept. 9-11.

Join the park naturalist for a full weekend of pre-historic based survival training. Taught from a ‘no modern tools’ perspective, these classes are designed to teach you how to cope with various difficulties when in survival situations.

Registration is required and is limited to a first come, first served basis until all spots full.

The $75 fee includes primitive camping for two nights and all class fees. The program begins 4-6 p.m. Friday and ends at noon on Sunday. Email todd.young@ky.gov for more information and registration.

The 512-acre park features a bison herd, a campground, a museum and gift shop, and a lake for bank fishing. The park is located 22 miles southwest of Covington on KY 338. Call 859-384-3522.

BURLINGTON, KY - Good Deeds for Bullied Breeds, an advocacy group that fights breed specific legislation (BSL) in Ohio, Kentucky and Indiana, will hold their third annual "Pittie Please, Find a Cure Walk!" on Sunday, August 28, 2011 at Idlewild Park in Burlington.  The event is from 11 a.m.

BOONE COUNTY, KY - The Oakbrook extension construction has not run a family of deer from the area.  Several deer were spotted crossing Oakbrook between highway 18 and the four way stop at Limaburg Road Tuesday morning.

Kentucky's deer population is estimated to be near one million animals.

Aquarium Says Goodbye to 'Mighty Mike', It's Largest Alligator

NEWPORT, KY( FOX 19)-  When does an 800-pound, 14-foot long alligator leave the Newport Aquarium? Answer: Whenever it wants to.  While that answer is right most of the time, this month the biologists at Newport Aquarium will transport Mighty Mike, the gigantic American alligator who has called the Aquarium home for the past several months, to his next home.  The last chance to see Mighty Mike at Newport Aquarium will be the weekend of May 21-22.  Mighty Mike is considered the largest alligator in the country on display outside of the state of Florida. He was on temporary loan to the Aquarium from a private collection in Florida.
