CVG snow plows rehearse for winter Tuesday

HEBRON, KY (FOX19) - Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport's is holding its annual snow team drill Tuesday in the morning.

Like highway road teams, the crews need training before the first big snow hits.  The airport has over 30 pieces of snow equipment.  CVG says clearing the airport ramp of snow if the equivalent of clearing 211 football fields, and sweeping one runway is equivalent to clearing 12 interstate lanes for approximately 2 miles.

Commercial Vehicle Safety Campaign Begins

Commercial Vehicle Safety Campaign Begins

GEORGETOWN, KY (FOX19) - The Kentucky State Police Commercial Vehicle enforcement Division is distributing free 18” x 24” reflective decals statewide to kick off their Ticketing Aggressive Cars and Trucks (TACT) campaign, which runs from Nov. 17, 2011 through Sept. 30 2012.

Funded and administered through the Federal Motor Carriers Safety Administration, this national program is intended to target motorists driving recklessly around commercial trucks and truck drivers who violate traffic laws. Officers will look for aggressive driving behaviors such as following too close, unsafe lane changes, speeding and not leaving enough space when passing large trucks.

According to KSP Lt. Col. Jack Miniard, director of the CVE Division, the campaign combines enforcement and education in a effort to reduce commercial vehicle-related crashes. “Most people simply don’t understand the dangers of big-rigs,” says Miniard.

Northern Kentucky a dangerous place for deer, drivers

Northern Kentucky a dangerous place for deer, drivers

BURLINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Statistics from the Kentucky State Police indicate that Northern Kentucky is a dangerous place to be a deer, and perhaps to drive a car.

Boone County leads the state with an average of 153 a year between 2006 and 2010, and Campbell and Kenton Counties are also in the top 10.

Those counties offer a dangerous combination: lots of deer, plus lots of people driving cars on highways.

State maps show many of Boone County's vehicle-deer crashes happened along I-75 and 275, both highways with lots of traffic and many wooded areas next to the roadway.

Deer take cover in wooded areas, and there are more wooded areas on hills, since they are harder for people to develop.  In Mason County, the vast majority of crashes happened on the hills surrounding Maysville, with many fewer in the flatter southern part of the county.  In Fort Wright and neighboring cities, there were few if any crashes on Route 1
