8th Annual Flower-a-thon Fundraiser planned next Saturday

DELHI TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Who knew that finding flowers could be so fun? The 8th Annual Flower-a-thon Fundraiser on Saturday, April 28 is a friendly team competition of who can find the wildest ones, and a chance to explore some of the most beautiful nature preserves in the Cincinnati area.

Whether joining a team or just joining for the experience, participants will get to search with local wildflower experts. Those interested can meet between 8:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. at Embshoff Woods (4050 Paul Road), where there will be breakfast by a fire before setting out with searchers. They can also meet at 1:00 p.m. at the gravel lot on Bender Road (1/2 mile from River Road) in Delhi Township to join a group.

Saturday now is officially “Battle of the Bluegrass Day”

 

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) Governor  Steve Beshear Friday proclaimed Saturday, March 31, as “Battle of the Bluegrass Day,” in recognition of the basketball game that will determine which Kentucky team will play for the NCAA championship.

“For the first time in the history of the NCAA Men’s Basketball tournament, the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the University of Louisville Cardinals will compete in a pivotal Final Four game in which one team will advance to play for the 2012 National Championship,” the proclamation reads.

The proclamation notes that the “eyes of the world will be watching,” and “Kentuckians take great pride in knowing that either the CATS or the CARDS will not only play for, but will win, the 2012 NCAA Men’s Basketball National Championship on Monday, April 2, 2012.”

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - The Florence Freedom are pitching in to help the Northern Kentucky and Tri-State families who have been effected by the recent storms that went through the area last week.

Beginning Monday, March 5, and running throughout the month of March, the team says they are planning on kicking back 25% of season ticket plan sales to benefit the victims of the storms.

Season ticket plans range from $90 for a ten-game pass to $495 for a V.I.P. pass that includes in-seat food service, a parking pass, the ability to email tickets to friends, and tickets that roll over to the next season if they’e not used.

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY (FOX19) - The Kentucky High School Athletic Association’s (KHSAA) 9th Region Girls’ and Boys’ Tournament returns to The Bank of Kentucky Center for the fourth consecutive year.  The tournament draw was announced Sunday morning, and the following first round matchups are:

 

·         Monday, February, 27 – Girls’ Quarterfinals

o    St. Henry vs. Holmes at 6:00pm

o    Newport Central Catholic vs. Boone County at 7:45pm

·         Tuesday, February 28 – Girls’ Quarterfinals

o    Ryle vs. Dixie Heights at 6:00pm

o    Notre Dame Academy vs. Highlands at 7:45pm

HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, KY (FOX19) - The Northern Ky Cheer & Dance Coaches is having their 20th Annual Cheer & Dance competition this Saturday at the Bank of Kentucky Center on the campus of NKU.  

There will be 117 teams performing, with all proceeds benefitting scholarships, Diocesan Catholic Children’s Home & Special Olympics.  

The event begins at 9:30am and runs until 6pm.  Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students, and $5 per car for parking.  Event T-shirts are $15 and Programs are $3.

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) - The Kentucky State Police are trying to convince people who host Super Bowl Parties to encourage designated driving, and also sounding warning for those who drive drunk that day.

The U.S. Department of Transportation and National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with support from the National Football League (NFL) and Techniques for Effective Alcohol Management (TEAM) Coalition, have joined forces with local highway safety and law enforcement officials to spread an important safety message to the public about designating a sober driver on Super Bowl Sunday – Fans Don’t Let Fans Drive Drunk.

Special Olympics Kentucky State Winter Games Returns to Perfect North Slopes

 

DEARBORN COUNTY, IN (FOX19) - More than 100 Special Olympics Kentucky athletes will be in Lawrenceburg, Ind., Jan. 22-24, weather permitting, when the Special Olympics Kentucky State Winter Games hit the snow at Perfect North Slopes.

Athletes from throughout Kentucky will make the trip across the Ohio River to compete in alpine skiing and snowshoeing events at the Games. This will be the 32nd year for the State Winter Games and the 15th consecutive year that Perfect North Slopes has hosted the event.

The 2012 Kentucky State Winter Games kick off at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, January 22, with the Opening Ceremonies, which will include the Special Olympics Oath and the lighting of the Special Olympics cauldron.
