HEBRON, KY (FOX19) - One of the top quarterback recruits in the country announced where he'll play college football this afternoon at Conner High School.

At the press conference, Barker announced he'll play for University of Kentucky.

Drew Barker, listed as high as the nation's 6th best quarterback recruit in his class by recruiting sites, said ahead of time that he would choose between Kentucky, South Carolina and Tennessee. 

The 6'4" 205 pound junior ran and threw for nearly 3,500 yards and 40 touchdowns last season at Conner.

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - A former University of Kentucky basketball player and Florence Mayor Diane Whalen will be in attendance when The Kentucky Shop reopens on Thursday.

The Kentucky Shop moved from its original location on Mall Road to a brand new facility at 6805 Houston Road (between Chuy's Mexican Food and Ted Bushelman Boulevard).

To celebrate the grand re-opening, The Kentucky Shop will be hosting former University of Kentucky basketball player and potential NBA #1 draft pick Nerlens Noel from 6-7:30pm.

Noel will be signing autographs and taking photos. Depending on the item, autographs will be available at a cost of $25-$100.

Turfway Park hosting first ever International Catch A Riding Star challenge race

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - Turfway Park will host the first ever International Catch A Riding Star challenge race for apprentice jockeys on Sat., March 23, as part of the premier afternoon of racing, Spiral Stakes day.

A team of licensed apprentice jockeys who have trained at racing schools overseas will be invited to compete in the race against riders from the Americas, including several from the North American Racing Academy (NARA), based at Bluegrass Community and Technical College (BCTC) in Lexington, Ky.  Awards will be given to both the winning rider and the team that earns the most points based on finishing positions.

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - This year’s annual 3rd grade service learning project at Florence Elementary was entitled Olympian Spirits.

After studying about the Ancient Greeks, the origin of our modern day Olympics, and about all of the different kinds of athletes who compete today, the students became aware of the fact that not all Olympians get as much attention as others. They discovered how hard people who compete in the Special Olympics work, and that they don’t always get the recognition and support they need and deserve.

Walton Verona basketball team honors Connecticut school shooting victims

WALTON, KY (FOX9) - The eighth grade girls Walton Verona basketball team found a way to honor the victims of the school shooting in Connecticut.

The girls wore green socks and green pre-wrap in their hair at their ball game Monday night to show their support for the Sandy Hook Elementary School victims and their families.

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - Mazak Corporation, a Penske Racing technical sponsor, offered congratulations to owner Roger Penske, driver Brad Keselowski and the No. 2 Miller Lite Dodge Team on a winning season and on earning Penske Racing’s first-ever Cup series title.

On November 18, Keselowski secured a 15th place finish at the Ford EcoBoost 400 season finale race at Homestead-Miami Speedway, all that was needed to clinch the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS) Championship for himself and his team.

Special Olympics Kentucky to hold state soccer tournament Saturday in Florence

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - Special Olympics Kentucky will hold its State Soccer Tournament at Central Park in Florence on Saturday, November 3.

The Tournament will include more than 147 athletes competing on 14 teams from Lexington, Louisville, Northern Kentucky, Frankfort, Grant County and Montgomery County. Play will get underway at 9 am and there will be championship games at noon and 1 pm.

Teams qualified for the State Tournament by competing in at least one of a series of Regional Tournaments that began in September and continued through mid-October.
