Ockerman 5th graders spread “Reading Power"

Ockerman 5th graders spread “Reading Power"

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) – Last week 5th graders from Mary Sefton’s Class at Ockerman Elementary School hosted a “Reading Power Hour” at Boone County Public Library’s Burlington Branch.

Dressed in matching tie dyed shirts, students huddled around their teacher to signal the beginning of their “Reading Power Hour.” During the event to promote literacy, 5th graders worked with younger students, ages 5- 8, to facilitate reading activities.

The stations included: Reading Buddies, File Folder Games, Read Alouds, and a Craft Station.

Throughout the school year, Sefton worked with the students to plan these activities.  She also collaborated with Elaine Demoret, Boone County Library’s Youth Services Associate; Demoret visited the classroom to meet with student groups and help plan final activities.  As a result of this partnership, both sessions were well attended.

FLORENCE, KY - Throughout the years, Karlo’s Bistro Italia has graciously supported the Accelerated Reader program sponsoring and providing an awesome experience for the students reading achievements and accomplishments.

At the end of April, students from first grade through the fifth grade were selected to participate based on point value, percentage correct when testing, and capability.  Family and friends joined the celebration.  Each student became a chef for the day, creating their own personal pizza.

The service and hospitality was excellent, as usual, making the students and their families feel welcome.

One to One program making a difference at Florence Elementary

FLORENCE, KY - One to One, a volunteer student mentoring program, made a difference in the lives of our Florence Elementary students.  Starting at the beginning of the school year until the end of April, 12 local volunteers worked individually with student’s one on one to develop literacy skills.  These coaches had to complete a six hour comprehensive training class to provide them with strategies and activities to promote and enrich primary reading skills.  The literacy coaches are successful adults from the community that bring all types of occupational backgrounds (both business men and women).  They represent various role models needed for the students, all impacting a young life.

Kelly Elementary and Florence Elementary 2nd graders are pen pals.

Kelly Elementary and Florence Elementary 2nd graders are pen pals.

FLORENCE, KY - Kelly Elementary approached Florence Elementary about becoming pen pals for two second grade classes.  Cathy Blank and Joy Browning jumped on board with Jackie Kirby and Kari Sprinkles from Kelly.
In September the classes traveled down to Kelly in Petersburg, KY to meet their pen pals.  Before the trip the students sent “All About Me” booklets to introduce themselves.  The booklets describe how they look, what they did this summer, what makes them happy, what they wanted to learn this school year, and a page about their family.  In return, Florence sent Kelly’s students their “All About Me” books.
