‘Royal Ball’ hosted at the Florence Palace on Center Street

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - Mrs. Beth Carpenter and Mrs. Jillian Hurtt’s first grade classes hosted a ‘Royal Ball’ at the Florence Palace on Center Street.  Many royal family members attended the ball including Prince Preston and Duchess Savannah and of course our very own Queen Elizabeth, known as Beth at Florence Elementary.

The classes completed a unit on fairy  tales and fiction, analyzing either make believe or fact, then writing an opinion piece.  The unit theme was ‘Around the world with a glass slipper’.

The two classes danced the day away starting with a curtsy from the girls and a bow from the boys.  The couples moved in slow motion so elegantly, across the royal ball room floor, twirling their partner with great ease. Our royal families dressed in many fashionable styles ranging from a top hat and shorts to looking like a prince.  Tea and crumpets (juice and cookies) was served to refresh our hungry and thirsty dancers.

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - Florence Elementary 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students participated in the first of many Science Knights at the end of April. Mrs. Amy Lawrence and Ms. Carleen Powell worked closely with Mr. Martin Schadler, a representative from the Boone County Cooperative Extension, to put together a program of science and engineering to highlight 21st century skills.

Students and guests traveled through 3 hands-on activity centers. They built an operational compost heap to learn how worms turn waste into fertile soil, and got to examine and analyze different types of soil using the district’s new microscopes. They made trusses by turning paper tubes into structures and then tested those structures for strength using weights. During the third activity they learned about aeronautics through a description of flight and by making and test flying a variety of paper airplanes.

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - Mrs. Simms’ second grade class completed their Accelerated Reader race by going beyond the requirements with each student striving for their own personal best.  Her class earned 1697 points.  That is 447 points above the final point value.

The theme this year was “The Amazing Race” which focused on being mentally and physically ready to run your own race.  The students prepared mentally and the classroom incentives engaged the students in the physical challenges.  Starting off, the class participated in a series of physical exercises. The repetitions were determined by the roll of the dice before putting the movements to music.  The students also enjoyed a healthy snack mix and learned the many benefits of dark chocolate.

The kindergartens studied a unit on America Symbols such as the statue of liberty, bald eagle, America flag, and liberty bell which led to raising $250.00 to go toward the Bald Eagle A.D.O.P.T. program at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Gardens.

The entire school was given the privilege to each make a $1.00 donation for a chance to name the Florence Elementary adopted eagle.  The proud recipient was Neveah Branch, a fourth grader, whose name was revealed during our morning show.  She named our honorary eagle “Brownie”.  Neveah received a family four pack of passes to the Cincinnati Zoo.
