Campground opens for NASCAR race at Kentucky Speedway

Campground opens for NASCAR race at Kentucky Speedway

Campers arrived in RVs and pitched tents at the campground at Kentucky Speedway Tuesday in preparation for the NASCAR Sprint Cup Quaker State 400 this Saturday.

The campground opened at noon for anyone who wanted to get an early start on tailgating. Campers will spend five days outside the track, in what they call their little NASCAR city.

"It's like a small city...everybody's got their favorites. Whether the good guy wins or the bad guy wins, it doesn't matter...any day away from work is a good day of racing," one person at Kentucky Speedway said.

4,000 spots were reserved for campers this week on the grounds of the Kentucky Speedway. That covers 150 acres of land. Inside the track, 600 more spots have been reserved.

"You'll get really close to people that are here, and it's a blessing that this part of the state got a race," said a camper.

New message signs, cameras coming to Ky. highways

Drivers in five Kentucky counties may notice new message signs and traffic-monitoring cameras coming in the next few months.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet says the equipment is designed to improve traffic flow and safety for motorists on interstate highways and parkways.

The signs and cameras are being installed in Boone, Gallatin, Hardin, Jefferson and Oldham counties.

Seven new side-mounted message signs and eight cameras are being installed by Arrow Electric of Louisville under a $1.5 million contract. The devices will be part of the cabinet's overall intelligent transportation system, which relays information to motorists about traffic incidents and delays.

Seven existing overhead message signs will also be replaced on the interstate system in Jefferson County.

The work is scheduled to be finished in January.

Boone County neighborhood takes time to say thanks to troops

Boone County neighborhood takes time to say thanks to troops

One small neighborhood in Burlington brought together more than 1,000 people on Saturday to collect care packages to send overseas as part of their Fourth of July celebration.

The purpose behind the "4th for Our Soldiers" party in the Arborwood subdivision in Boone County is to help active soldiers and their families. With enough food to feed 1,100 people, the "4th For Our Soldiers" event collects basic necessities to send overseas.

16-year-old Brady Dunn had the idea six years ago, and the response continues to grow.

"It makes you feel good and it makes you feel safe. It makes you feel that these guys are giving their lives for us and we should do something for them," said Dunn.

With the help of his mom Michelle and the entire neighborhood, last year's event raised more than $5,000. This year's goal is $8,000.
