Home & Remodeling Showcase this weekend Friday at NKY Convention Center

 

COVINGTON, KY (FOX19)-  The 39th annual Home & Remodeling Showcase will run from February 10th through the 12th at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center located on One West RiverCenter Blvd in Covington Kentucky.  The show is presented by Arronco Comfort Air and Remke biggs and is produced by the Home Builders Association of Northern Kentucky.

Official sponsors include Softub, Legacy Kitchens, Stegman Landscape & Tree, J& D Basement Systems, and Visionary Design & Remodeling. The show is one of the only locally produced home shows in the region. This year’s show will feature many changes as the show grows from a simple product and service exposition to a real lifestyle show. 

Show hours are Friday February 10- 4 p.m.-8 p.m., Saturday February 11- 10  a.m.-8 p.m., and Sunday February 12- 10  a.m.-4 p.m.

Household Waste Collection at Turfway Park this Saturday

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - The Northern Kentucky Solid Waste Management Area and the Northern Kentucky Household Hazardous Waste Action Coalition are joining forces to help residents of Boone, Campbell and Kenton Counties properly dispose of unwanted household hazardous waste. 

At this event, residents can dispose of aerosol cans, antifreeze, batteries, corrosives/flammables (fuel, kerosene, etc.), drugs (over the counter and prescription), e-scraps (computers, monitors, keyboards, printers, cell phones, etc.), ink cartridges/toner, light bulbs, oil, pesticides, propane tanks, paint and televisions. Residents can also bring documents that they want shredded.

(FOX19) - The four Northern Kentucky libraries have been encouraging everyone for the last couple of months to read All the Way Home: Building a Family in a Falling-Down House, this year’s NKY One Book, One Community selection. The author of the book, David Giffels, will speak at all four library systems in November. Everyone, (whether they’ve read the book or not) will enjoy listening to Giffels talk about his real-life experience restoring a dilapidated mansion in Akron, Ohio.  Former writer for MTV’s Beavis and Butt Head, Giffels’ speaking style (and writing style) is full of humor and unexpected insights.

Kroger provides details, asks you to check for recalled beef products

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The Kroger Co. stores in the Cincinnati and Dayton areas are asking customers to check their refrigerators and freezers for 5 lb. chub Kroger Ground Beef 73% Lean 27% Fat and Kroger Beef Patties with a "best before or freeze by" date of September 12, 2011. 

This ground beef is part of a recall announced by Tyson Fresh Meats, Inc. 

Kroger customers can visit www.kroger.com/recall for the list of products subject to the recall sold in Kroger’s family of stores. The Tyson website lists all of the affected products and retailers. 

Kroger has removed affected items from store shelves and initiated its customer recall notification system. Customers who may have purchased the affected products will receive register receipt messages and/or automated phone calls.

PWC awarded home repair grants for Northern Kentucky

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - People Working Cooperatively (PWC) a local nonprofit that provides critical home repairs, weatherization, modification and maintenance services to help residents stay safely in their homes, announced today it has secured $25,000 in grant funds for emergency home repairs in Northern Kentucky.

PWC received a grant of $5,000 for emergency home repairs from the Scripps Howard Foundation that will be used for the emergency repair program for low-income homeowners in Northern Kentucky.

State offers tree seedlings at bulk prices

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) - With fall just around the corner, state foresters are encouraging Kentuckians to plan their tree-planting activities now by ordering tree seedlings through the Kentucky Division of Forestry (KDF). 

Nearly 50 species including white pine, baldcypress, black walnut, white oak, yellow-poplar, dogwood, redbud and many more are available by calling toll free 1-800-866-0555.  Order forms are also available on-line at http://forestry.ky.gov.

The trees are available as bare-root seedlings in bundles of 10 or 100 and range in price from $24 to $45 per bundle.  The seedlings are lifted at two state tree nurseries in Marshall and Morgan counties and delivered at your request from winter to early spring.

Seedlings are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, therefore it is advised to place orders as soon as possible.

(FOX19) - Northern Kentucky One Book One Community -- the reading program that encourages everyone to read the same book -- announces this year’s selection -- All the Way Home: Building a Family in a Falling-Down House by David Giffels.

All the Way Home follows the side-splitting and sometimes maddening travails of Giffels and his wife as they attempt to restore a crumbling mansion. Their many adventures include nudging the elderly ex-owner to vacate the premises and battling the wisteria vines, raccoons, squirrels, and mice that have overtaken the attic. This is the story of a young family growing into itself. Through the ups and downs of their project they are forced to deal with frustration, loss, perseverance and doubt. David Giffels currently teaches Creative Non-Fiction as an Assistant Professor at the University of Akron.
