EDGEWOOD, KY (FOX19) – Unlike several years ago, there is no shortage of the flu vaccine being reported this year. 

The Northern Kentucky Health Department says people should take advantage of that by getting one soon.

Public invited to Dragon Boat racing Saturday

ALEXANDRIA, KY (FOX19) - On Saturday, September 10, the ancient sport of Chinese dragon boat racing will return to Northern Kentucky with the Second Annual Kentucky Dragon Boat Festival. From early in the morning until late in the afternoon, A.J. Jolly Park in Campbell County will be filled with 59 teams of racers from all over the tri-state area racing 57-foot Hong-Kong style dragon boats to raise funds for breast cancer awareness and treatment.

Spectators are welcome to cheer their favorite teams on to victory. Donations can be made to a specific team or the event in general at www.stelizabeth.com/dragonboat. All proceeds from the event benefit the presenting team, the Kentucky Thorough-Breasts, Kentucky’s first breast cancer survivor team, and the Breast Centers of St. Elizabeth Healthcare.

Team sign-in begins at 7 a.m., the Opening Ceremony at 8 a.m., and races start 8:15 a.m.

HIV Continuing Education Course Offered for Health Care Providers

EDGEWOOD, KY (FOX19) - The Northern Kentucky Health Department is offering a continuing education course on HIV for health care providers from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, at the Health Department’s District Office, 610 Medical Village Drive, Edgewood, Ky.   

This course covers basic medical information about HIV disease, progression, transmission and prevention; management of HIV in the workplace; legal issues; statistics; and local resources for HIV testing and case management.

The course will cost $20 per person. A check made out to the Northern Kentucky Health Department or cash is payable at the time of class.

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - A new report says that compared to the rest of the state, Northern Kentucky adults are more likely to report walkable communities, and less likely to support banning cell phone use while driving.

Those are only two of many different findings in the annual poll by local and state health organizations.

City, County, and NKY health departments join to address crypto outbreak

CINCINNATI (FOX19) - The three largest health departments in the Tri-State will hold a joint news conference to prevent the further spread of Cryptosporidiosis in the area.

Cryptosporidiosis, commonly called Crypto, is a diarrheal disease caused by microscopic parasites. Symptoms include watery diarrhea, stomach cramps or pain, fever, nausea, and vomiting.  To date, more than 200 cases have been identified in Southwest Ohio and Northern Kentucky.

Wednesday morning at the Hamilton County Health Department's office in Mt. Auburn, they and the Cincinnati and Northern Kentucky departments will provide an update on the current status of Crypto in the community, including its spread in pool water.  Further, information will be provided on preventing the spread of the parasite, particularly over the upcoming Labor Day weekend, and moving forward throughout the fall.

Northern Kentucky WIC program to convert to electronic Cards

EDGEWOOD, KY (FOX19) - Next month, the Northern Kentucky Health Department will begin using a Web-based system to issue benefits for the Women, Infants and Children program. The new system will utilize information collected at WIC participant visits to issue Electronic Benefits Transfer cards for WIC purchases. Currently, clients are issued paper vouchers.

Northern Kentucky will be the first health department in the Cincinnati metro area to offer EBT cards for the WIC program. More than 9,000 participants in Boone, Campbell, Grant and Kenton Counties participate in WIC; and benefits are accepted at 70 local stores.

Freedom "Striking Out" Cancer on Tuesday

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - On Tuesday, August 30, the Florence Freedom will be hosting Striking Out Cancer at the ballpark as the Freedom take on the Gateway Grizzlies at 7:05 pm.

The night will be dedicated to supporting the fight against cancer through honoring and encouraging cancer victims, survivors and their families.

Thanks to local business sponsorships, over 1,500 tickets for the game have been purchased for donation to cancer victims and families.  The majority of tickets have been claimed by fans through the American Cancer Society and the I Have Wings foundation, but a few still remained (as of Friday) and can be claimed by contacting the Freedom box office at 859-594-4487.

That night, the Freedom will be wearing special pink ribbon themed jerseys to be autographed and auctioned off after the game.  The proceeds will help support the I Have Wings and Ashley Thompson Foundations.
