Low cost vaccine available as whooping cough spreads across Northern Kentucky

Low cost vaccine available as whooping cough spreads across Northern Kentucky

KY (FOX19) - Northern Kentucky’s outbreak of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, continues to spread this summer, with more than 61 cases reported. Vaccination is one way residents can protect themselves and infants they may come in contact with, and the Health Department has the vaccine available for $4 at its county health centers.

“Pertussis can cause serious illness, hospitalization and death — especially in infants who are too young to be fully vaccinated,” said Lynne M. Saddler, MD, MPH, District Director of Health. “Because vaccine protection fades over time, anyone who plans to be around infants should be vaccinated with the Tdap booster shot, which will provide renewed protection against whooping cough. Parents, grandparents and caregivers are strongly encouraged to get their booster shot.”

The Tdap booster is available by appointment at all four of the Health Department’s county health centers, listed below.

Kentuckians turn in thousands of old prescriptions

Kentuckians turn in thousands of old prescriptions

CINCINNATI (FOX19) – The Kentucky State Police report that the National "Take Back" Initiative netted the agency 644 pounds of prescription drugs from those who wished to discard unwanted medications.  Each of the sixteen KSP posts collected the drugs for four hours this past Saturday.

The program, organized by the Drug Enforcement Administration, is intended to give people a safe and convenient way to part with unneeded medications.

KSP Commissioner Rodney Brewer was pleased with the turnout at post locations across the state.  “The continued support of citizens who choose to properly dispose of unwanted prescription pills speaks volumes to the effectiveness of this program” said Brewer. “Once again, Kentuckians have assisted law enforcement in the removal of potentially dangerous drugs from reaching the hands of those whom they do not belong.”

Beshear limits near-term insurance changes in tornado counties

FRANKFORT, KY (FOX19) - Governor Steve Beshear Wednesday signed an executive order that will prohibit insurance companies from cancelling policies or changing rates for policy holders in counties affected by the deadly storms and tornadoes on Feb. 29 and March 2.  This is the first time this type of order has been executed in Kentucky.

“As our families begin to repair their homes and get their finances in order, their policies for health, life or property insurance are more important than ever,” said Gov.  Beshear.  “We cannot allow insurance companies to cancel or change these policies in the wake of the storm, and my executive order will make sure that doesn’t happen.”
