Gateway Offers Free Domestic Violence Workshop

COVINGTON, KY (Jan. 19, 2012)— Gateway Community and Technical College will offer a domestic violence workshop, “Becoming A Survivor,” Jan. 25 from 3 to 4 p.m. in Room A105 at the college’s Covington Campus, 1025 Amsterdam Road. Ashley Novogroski from the Women’s Crisis Center is the featured speaker.

Gateway recently received a $300,000 grant from the Department of Justice to create and deliver training, services, and awareness around domestic violence and related issues on campus.  Funds will support a part-time coordinator, security supplies and equipment, and a full-time service advocate employed through Women's Crisis Center.

“This partnership between Gateway and the Women’s Crisis Center will help our students understand domestic violence issues and what they can do to protect themselves,” said Tim Chesser, Gateway security director. “While we haven’t had any violent incidents on campus, we know domestic violence affects many women nationwide. Giving women information they can use to protect themselves is part of our service to our students and the community.”

The workshop is free and open to the public. No reservations are necessary. In addition to Novogroski, Chesser and other Gateway personnel will be on hand to discuss services available to students.

Gateway is still accepting students for the semester that begins Jan. 30. Apply online at www.gateway.kctcs.edu or call 859-442-1134.
