FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - The City of Florence has a weekend of events planned to celebrate Memorial Day 2013.

The Renegade Olympics is being held on Sunday, May 26 and feature the Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment “Renegades”, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault).

Highlights of the Renegade Olympics include:

  • 5K Run/Walk (7:30am assembly; Houston Road Walmart; begins at 8am)
  • Boot Camp (9:30am-12:30pm; Boone County High School; public participation)
  • Golf Scramble (9:30am-2:30pm; World of Golf; Two-man scramble; best ball)
  • 4 on 4 Basketball Tournament (9:30am-2:30pm; Boone County High School; 16-team double elimination; all teams will play with at least one Renegade)
  • Softball Tournament (9:30am-2:30pm; Boone County High School)

Then on Monday, May 27 the annual Memorial Day Parade & Program will be highlighted by the City's adopted military unit.

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 6 held its 8th annual Equipment Roadeo Competition on Wednsday, May 22 at the Richwood Flea Market in Florence, Ky.

With all the equipment work that our maintenance crews do, these Olympic style events helps hone the skills of our men and women who help maintain and keep our roads in the best condition possible.

Heavy Equipment Operators from District 6 competed in an obstacle course with a dump truck with an 11’ foot plow blade, as well as other contests using backhoes, graders, tractors and trucks.

Winners will represent District 6 in the Statewide Rodeo that will be held at the Anderson County Community Park in Lawerenceburg, Kentucky on August 20th and 21st.

This year, Kentucky will be hosting the Regional Roadeo at the Kentucky Horse Park on September 9, 10 and 11th.

Family event in Florence to highlight public services staff

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - The annual Public Services Night Out is being held in Florence on Tuesday, May 21 from 4pm - 6:30pm.

The event being held in the Florence Mall parking lot, is hosted in conjunction with National Public Works Week and is an opportunity to raise awareness and recognize the impact Public Services staff has on improving the quality of life within the community.

Bring family and friends to enjoy free ballpark style food and drinks, a bounce-house for the children, live demonstrations, and see the equipment used on a daily basis by the Florence Public Services Department.

Gateway Urban Center Kicks Off Healthy Happy Hour Series

COVINGTON, KY — Gateway Community and Technical College has begun a new Healthy Happy Hour Series of fun, informative family activities at its Urban Center in downtown Covington at 525 Scott Boulevard. The activities are free of charge and open to the public.

“The activities are designed to help Covington become a healthier, happier community,” said Michael Lee, Gateway director of inclusion and cultural initiatives. “They are part of our outreach to bring the community into Gateway where we make success happen.”

The series began May 7 with Zumba classes that continue for another five weeks on Tuesdays from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. “It’s not too late to come and have fun in these Latin-inspired, dance-fitness classes led by licensed instructor Y’Vonne Burkart,” Lee said.

Free Amateur Photo Expo being held at Boone County main library

BURLINGTON, KY (FOX19) - Boone County Public Library, in partnership with the Tri-State Photographic Society, will host a free Amateur Photo Expo at the Main Library, 1786 Burlington Pike on Friday, May 17 and Saturday, May 18.

The event begins with an opening reception on Friday, May 17 at 6 p.m.  The public is invited to enjoy refreshments while they browse the work of photographers from the Tri-State Photographic Society. The group’s photography will be on display in the art gallery throughout the month of May.

The Expo opens on Saturday, May 18 at 9 a.m. with help desks, hands-on lighting displays, and drop-in, 30-minute workshops. The expo is designed to help anyone with an interest in photography, learn how to take better pictures. Photographers will be available to assist people with their cameras and answer questions about the different settings. Participants should bring their cameras and manuals to take advantage of this service.

Annual Arbor Day program being held in Florence

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - The City of Florence will hold its annual Arbor Day Program on Saturday, May 11 from 10am - noon at the Florence Government Center.

The program will include a brief history of Arbor Day, reading of the City’s Arbor Day proclamation, various tree planting activities, and lunch.

The City invites the public, along with groups like the Boy and Girl Scouts, to come and join in this year’s celebration of Arbor Day.

The National Arbor Day Foundation has named the City of Florence “Tree City USA” each year since 1991. To be a named a “Tree City USA” the City must meet four requirements:

(1) Have a tree board or department; (2) Have a tree care ordinance; (3) Have a comprehensive community forestry program; and (4) Have an Arbor Day observance.

Free program being held on the history of the Boone County Fair

BURLINGTON, KY (FOX19) - The Boone County Historical Society Meeting and Program titled "History of the Boone County Fair" will be held at 7 p.m. on Thursday May 16 at the Main Boone County Public Library, 1786 Burlington Pike.

The program is free and open to the public.  Program speaker John Brady Walton will explain the history of the annual Boone County Fair.

The Boone County Public Library co-sponsors the event.
