WALTON, KY (FOX9) - The eighth grade girls Walton Verona basketball team found a way to honor the victims of the school shooting in Connecticut.

The girls wore green socks and green pre-wrap in their hair at their ball game Monday night to show their support for the Sandy Hook Elementary School victims and their families.

Bank of Kentucky Invests $1 Million in Gateway Urban Campus

COVINGTON, KY – The Bank of Kentucky, Inc., has committed $1 million to the Gateway Community and Technical College Foundation for use in developing Gateway’s Urban Campus in downtown Covington. The gift is the first investment of $1 million or more ever received by the college or the foundation.  It is the latest in series of major announcements related to the campus in recent weeks.

“The Bank of Kentucky is pleased to make this investment to assist the college in its goal to make higher education more accessible to the residents of the urban core,” said Robert W. Zapp, president of The Bank of Kentucky. “We believe strongly in the concept of the Urban Campus and the positive influence it will have on the revitalization and future growth of the city and the region, as well as the opportunities it will provide for students.”

Urgent need for toys at Northern Kentucky Salvation Army centers

NORTHERN KY (FOX19) - The Salvation Army Community Centers in Northern Kentucky, located in Covington and Newport and including all of Boone, Campbell and Kenton counties, announced on Thursday that they have a growing, unmet need for toys for local children.

The two local Community Centers operated by The Salvation Army have long implemented Christmas programs to ensure that local families in need can experience a more joyful Christmas.  This year, The Salvation Army in Northern Kentucky expects to serve more than 2,200 children with some form of Christmas Assistance.

“It’s an important part of what we do as an organization to provide Christmas presents for these children,” stated Capt. Heather Holt, pastor at The Salvation Army in Covington, KY.  “Currently, our need is greater than the number of toys and gifts we’ve been able to collect, so we’re hoping we can get the word out and people will come forward to help out.”

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - The City of Florence will hold its annual Christmas Tree Lighting on Tuesday, December 4 from 6-8pm at the Florence Government Center, 8100 Ewing Boulevard.

The free event, held under a tent, will include: Christmas activities conducted by City businesses and organizations; Christmas music performed by the Florence Community Band and Florence Community Chorus; decorated Christmas Trees by elementary students; photographs with Santa Claus (You must bring your own camera); refreshments; sleigh rides; and much more.

City of Florence plans Veterans Day celebration

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - The City of Florence will hold their annual Veterans Day program on Sunday, November 11 at 2pm at the Government Center.

City officials will honor veterans of all wars and also recognize the Boone County Jaycees essay contest winner. The Florence Government Center is located in the 8100 block of Ewing Boulevard.

Florence boy scout troop set to honor veterans

HEBRON, KY (FOX19) - A local boy scout troop is helping honor veterans at the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport.

Boy Scout Troop 1, from Florence will assist CVG in its celebration of Veterans Day by placing 500 flags at the entrance of the airport at 7:00 p.m. on Friday.

The Boy Scouts will be accompanied by their troop leaders as well as several members of the Sons of American Legion, Squadron 4 of Florence, who provided the flags.  The flags will be in place through Tuesday, November 13th.

“We are so are grateful to the brave men and women who serve our country, and we are honored to participate in this event.  We especially want to thank Boy Scout Troop 1 and the Sons of American Legion and all the volunteers who partner with us to honor our armed forces,” says Candace McGraw, Chief Executive Officer of CVG.
