Author David Giffels, the ultimate do-it-yourselfer, will speak at all four NKY Library Systems | Arts & Culture
Title (Max 100 Charaters)
(FOX19) - The four Northern Kentucky libraries have been encouraging everyone for the last couple of months to read All the Way Home: Building a Family in a Falling-Down House, this year’s NKY One Book, One Community selection. The author of the book, David Giffels, will speak at all four library systems in November. Everyone, (whether they’ve read the book or not) will enjoy listening to Giffels talk about his real-life experience restoring a dilapidated mansion in Akron, Ohio. Former writer for MTV’s Beavis and Butt Head, Giffels’ speaking style (and writing style) is full of humor and unexpected insights. Meet David Giffels and hear his story at the following times and locations:
- Thursday, November 3, 7 p.m., Kenton County Public Library, Erlanger Branch, 401 Kenton Lands Rd, Erlanger, KY
- Friday, November 4, 7 p.m., Campbell County Public Library, Carrico/Fort Thomas Branch, 1000 Highland Ave, Fort Thomas, KY
- Saturday, November 5, 10 a.m., Grant County Public Library, 201 Barnes Rd, Williamstown, KY
- Saturday, November 5, 2 p.m., Boone County Public Library, 1786 Burlington Pk, Burlington, KY
David Giffels currently teaches Creative Nonfiction as an Assistant Professor at the University of Akron. Prior to this, he was a columnist for the Akron Beacon Journal and a contributing commentator on NPR. His writing has appeared in New York Times Magazine. In addition to All The Way Home, Giffels is the co-author of two other books: the rock biography, Are We Not Men? We Are Devo! and Wheels of Fortune: The Story of Rubber in Akron. He has received dozens of awards, including the 2006 National Award for Commentary from the American Association of Sunday and Feature Editors and a 2008 General Excellence Award from the National Society of Newspaper Columnists. In 2009, he was honored as Best News Writer in Ohio by the Associated Press. Giffels has been nominated six times for the Pulitzer Prize and may be the only man alive who has ever tried to vanquish squirrels from the attic using an electric guitar. He lives in Akron, Ohio with his wife and two children.
“I’m really exciting about coming to Northern Kentucky and telling my story to the people and getting to hear their stories as well,” said Giffels in a recent WVXU radio interview. “It’s healing for all of us when we get to tell our stories of woe.”
Northern Kentucky One Book, One Community is a collaboration of the four Northern Kentucky Libraries: Boone, Campbell, Grant and Kenton with support from the Kentucky Enquirer.
