Free services being offered at Mike's Carwash grand opening

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - Mike's Carwash in Florence is celebrating their grand opening by lending support to the 101st Airborne Division, 2nd Brigade 502nd Airborne Infantry Unit.

During grand opening events on May 3 &4, Mike's is offering customers free carwashes. The offer is not valid at other Cincinnati-area Mike’s locations.

In lieu of payment for a “Works” carwash, a $15 value, customers are encouraged to make a donation to the 101st Airborne Division, 2nd Brigade 502nd Airborne Infantry Unit, known as “Team Renegade”.  The troops are honored guests at this year’s annual Memorial Day parade.

Driver gets 16 years in crash that killed 2 women

BURLINGTON, KY (FOX19)- A driver was sentenced to 16 years in prison for a crash that killed two Kentucky women.

Logan Ellis, 23, was sentenced Wednesday morning in Boone County.

Ellis was drunk and speeding when he crashed his car on U.S. 25 in Walton in December of 2011. Heather Stanley, 21, and Stacy Hopkins, 43, died in the crash.

Pres. Obama mentions CVG during press conference

WASHINGTON, DC (FOX19)- President Barack Obama mentioned the Greater Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport during a press conference with reporters in Washington on Tuesday.

President Obama was talking about the sequester and rebuilding things like rebuilding airports, roads and bridges and cited a study that ranked the world's top 100 airports.

"There was not a single U.S. airport that came in the top 25," he said. "I think Cincinnati airport came in 30th."

 

Some frequent fliers in the Tri-State had positive words to
say about CVG.

"I always like flying into Cincinnati. They have good
food. It's clean. It always is a smooth run. I don't experience a lot of
lines," said Ashley Cooper.

Thousands of comic books being given away in Florence

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - Thousands of comic books are being given away on Saturday, May 4 during an annual event in Florence.

Comic Book World is celebrating their 12th annual Free Comic Book Day from 11am - 7pm. Besides the giveaways, the day will include appearences by New York Times Best Selling author Davis Mack, Travis Fessler from the Pickled Brothers Circus and the Black-N-Bluegrass Roller Girls.

Florence teacher selected to take part in STEM fellowship in Washington D.C.

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - A middle school teacher from Florence has been selected as one of only 50 middle and high school educators from across the country to take part in the exclusive Siemens STEM Institute fellowship.

Melissa Stolz teaches sixth and eighth grade at Rector A. Jones Middle School. Stolz was just one of 50 middle and high school educators from across the country to take part in the exclusive Siemens STEM science, technology, engineering and math Institute fellowship.

The Siemens STEM Institute is a one-of-a-kind, all-expense-paid weeklong immersion program that promotes hands-on, real-world integration of STEM in the classroom. The Siemens STEM Institute will take place August 4-9 just outside of Washington, D.C., at the world headquarters of Discovery Communications.

Senior Services of Northern Kentucky recieves $10,000 grant

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - Senior Services of Northern Kentucky (SSNK) received a generous $10,000 grant from the Home Instead Senior Care Foundation.

The Emergency Meals program provides seniors in distressed circumstances like a return from the hospital or illness or on a waiting list to receive Meals on Wheels. This generous donation will provide 2,000 Emergency Meals to approximately 200 older adults in Northern Kentucky. 

There is a great need for funding as the demand for healthy, nutritious meals for older adults, as well as the population in general is increasingly sharply. A check was presented to SSNK Executive Director Ken Rechtin and Director of Advancement Tricia Watts by Les Murphy from Home Instead Senior Care located in Florence, KY on April 25.
