Ribbon cutting at Florence Antique Mall

Ribbon cutting at Florence Antique Mall

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - Customers will have more time to shop at the Florence Antique Mall. The antique shop is adding evening hours.

The ribbon was cut on May 1 on the new and improved Florence Antique Mall. Store hours are from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. daily.

“We’re coming up on our 15th anniversary this summer,” says owner Coleen Detzel, “and we understand that keeping our customers happy is our top priority. After all, without them, we wouldn’t be here, and I think too many businesses forget that simple fact these days.”

General Manager Wendy Phillips adds: “We make a point of getting to know our customers, and we listen to their suggestions and comments. For example, over the years, we added a consignment program, a 30 day layaway, and a weekend café, all based on customer suggestions. Extending our hours until 8:00 p.m. is at our customer’s request. And we are thrilled to be able to do it!"

Spiral Stakes winner scratched from 139th Kentucky Derby

Black Onyx (Source: Turfway Park)

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE3/FOX19)- Spiral Stakes winner Black Onyx has been scratched from Saturday's 139th running of the Kentucky Derby, according to a news release from Churchill Downs.

Black Onyx won the #1 post position in Wednesday's post position draw. Darren Rogers, Senior Director of Communications and Media Services said stewards have decided that the #1 slot in the starting gate will be left open and that the remaining 19 horses in the Derby field will start from the post positions they drew.

Trainer Kelly Breen told the AP the colt looked good training on Friday, but he had some swelling in the ankle, so an X-ray was taken which revealed the chip.

Black Onyx won the Spiral Stakes at Turfway Park in March. The horse was bred in Kentucky by Cloverleaf Farms II, Inc. and is by Rock Hard Ten out of the Cape Town mare Kalahari Cat.

Open burn ban begins in some Kentucky counties

Open burn ban begins in some Kentucky counties

FRANFFORT, KY (FOX19) - Ozone season has officially begun in Kentucky, and for some counties that means taking extra care to learn before you burn.  From May through September, open burning in Boone, Boyd, Bullitt, Campbell, Jefferson, Kenton, Lawrence, and Oldham counties is restricted to protect air quality.

Ground level ozone is a summertime pollutant, created when pollutants chemically react in the atmosphere in the presence of heat and sunlight.

“Open burning is a major contributor to ozone pollution during the warmer months of the year,” said John Lyons, director of the Division for Air Quality. “That’s why most open burning is restricted in those counties that have historically exceeded pollution levels permitted by the Clean Air Act.”

Frontier, CVG's newest airline, introduces carry-on fees

Frontier will start flying out of CVG in about two weeks. The new fees kick in this summer for those booking with third parties, and not Frontier directly.

(FOX19)- How do you book your flights and vacations?  Do you use discount travel websites, or do you go right to the airline?  Frontier Airlines has launched a new program that could cost you if you don't book through them, and bring a carry-on.

"I think it's absolutely crazy.  I think that the carrier should not charge that because we have to charge for our bag anyway to get on," said New York resident, Ashley Wilson.

Frontier will start flying out of CVG in about two weeks.  The new fees kick in this summer for those booking with third parties, and not Frontier directly.  Those fees start at $25.

"If you check in online at our website before you get to the airport, that's also $25.  And then, as you get further in the airport then those fees go up with $100 being the fee for at the gate," said Kate O'Malley, a spokesperson for the airline.

Officials seek new home for CVG's historic murals

Officials seek new home for CVG's historic murals

HEBRON, KY (FOX19)- Some massive murals at the Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) need a new home.

They've been at the airport for about 40 years, and they're no longer in some plans for renovations.

In the 1970s, 14 murals were on the chopping block at Union Terminal as part of plans to demolish the concourse that housed those pieces.  Back then, a group called "Save the Terminal Committee" raised the money to move them to their new home at CVG.

Fast forward about 40 years later, and you'll see their future is in question again.

"We have been a good custodian of them and took good care of them for the last 40 years.  Now we'll try to find a new home for them for the next 40-plus years," said airport CEO, Candace McGraw.

Of those 14 mosaic pieces by artist Winold Reiss, 9 of them are in terminals 1 and 2 that are closed and set to be torn down.  Those 9 murals are not in the airport's plans for the future.
