Florence Elementary discovered incredible insects

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - The students at Florence Elementary have become a little buggy!  The Cincinnati Museum on Wheels Program presented “Incredible Insects”.  There are approximately 1,700,000 types of living creatures on earth and 1 million of those creatures are insects.   Only about one third have been identified.

Each student built their own insect that included antennas, head, abdomen, legs, and thorax.  Almost all insects have antennas on their heads which allows them to smell, taste and communicate.  Insects have compound eyes made up of lots of little eyes.   The abdomen is used for digestion and reproduction.  The final part is the thorax which includes the legs, wings, and spiracles which is how the insect breathes. The kids were given the opportunity to hold a Madagascar Roach and identify the body parts and whether they were male or female.

The students learned how helpful insects are in the world

FLORENCE, KY (FOX19) - The Christmas season has begun and Mr. and Mrs. Claus visited Florence Elementary for lunch and checked on all the good boys and girls.  The students had loads of questions for Mr. Claus from ‘where are the reindeer?’ to ‘how did they get here?

There were lots of smiles and hugs going around in anticipation of Christmas Day excitement.
The fun didn’t stop with lunch.

Mr. and Mrs. Claus returned to school for “Breakfast with Santa”.  Many students and parents joined us for a hot breakfast of eggs, biscuits and gravy, and sausage. The line was long but each student was able to have their picture taken with Mr. and Mrs. Claus and received a pack to make an ornament.
